Congressman Pfluger Sends Letter Opposing Federally-Funded Abortions

Today, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) sent a letter with Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (IN-3) and 198 other GOP colleagues to congressional leadership pledging to oppose any legislation that eliminates or weakens the Hyde Amendment or any other pro-life provisions currently in law.

Rep. Congressman Pfluger (TX-11): “The Hyde Amendment is a bipartisan effort to protect and defend unborn life and prevent taxpayer dollars from going towards abortions. Democrats have now reversed course and are threatening to wield their control to overturn this important provision. The people of the 11th District of Texas are vehemently opposed to their taxpayer dollars being used to pay for abortions. Every unborn child should have the right to life, and I pledge to be a voice to the voiceless and do everything I can to protect the Hyde Amendment.”

RSC Chairman Jim Banks (IN-3): “Despite decades of consensus on this issue, radical Democrats have signaled they no longer have an interest in protecting the conscience rights of millions of Americans who do not want their hard-earned money used to pay for abortions. My colleagues and I demand congressional leaders protect the ban on taxpayer-funded abortions and save the Hyde Amendment.”

The Hyde Amendment is a bipartisan ban that prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortions or entities that provide abortions. Recently, Congressional Democrats have indicated their intent to overturn the amendment. This provision has been codified in law since 1976 and has been supported by every president since Jimmy Carter, and President Joe Biden even reaffirmed his support for the amendment in 2019.
