SAN ANGELO, TX—Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) joined veterans, families, and community leaders for the dedication of the Heroes on the Concho Memorial, a permanent tribute honoring more than 20,0000 Concho Valley citizens who served our country faithfully in World War II.
The memorial is located along the banks of the Concho River in San Angelo, featuring a six-foot bronze statue of a World War II airman alongside panels bearing the names of veterans who called the Concho Valley home. The project was led by the San Angelo Area Foundation in partnership with the City of San Angelo, and numerous community donors and volunteers.
During his remarks at the dedication ceremony, Congressman Pfluger highlighted the service and bravery of Concho Valley natives General Ira Eaker and General Earl Rudder, who were consequential American military leaders of World War II. He also honored Angelo State University legend Coach Phil George, recognizing his service not only in World War II but also in the Vietnam War.
"When Americans were called to serve in World War II, the Greatest Generation stepped up without hesitation, defending freedom across the globe. Their courage and sacrifice changed the course of history, and we owe them a debt we can never fully repay. Here in the Concho Valley, more than 20,000 of our neighbors answered that call, and their names now stand etched in stone. The Heroes on the Concho Memorial is a permanent reminder of their service to our country, allowing their stories to be told to the next generation of our youth,"said Congressman Pfluger (TX-11).
