Rep. Pfluger on the Democrats' nonsense requests in their ransom letter:
Elections do have consequences, and they basically sent a ransom letter, a hostage situation. Let's just take Medicaid, for example, hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud, waste, and abuse were being sent to states like New York and California that don't know how to run it, that were double-counting and double-enrolling people. A million and a half, at least, illegal aliens were receiving those benefits. And we said, no more of this... Part of their demand letter last night was to reinstate a million and a half illegal aliens onto Medicaid.
President Trump recently cut $9 billion... he found $9 billion in savings, in efficiencies, in fraud, waste, and abuse, and cut it. And they [Democrats] said, you have to reinstate all that. Well, the answer to that is no. We're making progress here on getting our government back to an accountable entity to the taxpayers, and we're not going to cave on this.
So elections do have consequences, and they are just in a real bad spot....Democrats are rudderless right now. They have no leadership. They are holding on and grasping to thin air, and we're not going to put up with it. There's a very easy way out of this. Go to the Senate floor, vote on a clean resolution, and let's get on with the business that helps the American people.
Rep. Pfluger on how a government shutdown will affect TX-11 residents:
In the immediate term, you're still going to have people receiving federal benefits, whether that's Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. If you have SNAP benefits, WIC, or any of those programs, those will still be delivered. There will be some personnel who are deemed essential, and there will be some who are deemed nonessential.
So it's just inefficiency. It's not the way to operate. Why would Chuck Schumer want to opt for a shutdown and the flip-flopping that he's done over his career as well? The Permian Basin is really looking to our government to solve big, tough problems like permitting reform, which allows us to build pipelines, roads, and highways, bridges... How can we even think about that when we can't come together on this work?
House Republicans, almost two weeks ago, passed a clean Continuing Resolution, and yet Democrats are unwilling to come to the table on a budget that President Biden signed. The numbers are exactly the same that Biden signed on to. So it really is petty. Now, if this continues, what we can expect is that there will be an impact. There will be an impact on federal workers' pay. There will be an impact on the staffing. My hope is that it doesn't continue, that they come to their senses, that they come to the table, that they vote yes, and that we can move on.
Rep. Pfluger on the path forward:
My thought on this is, it's pretty simple. We passed a bill. It doesn't increase or decrease spending. It's pretty easy. Democrats need to come to the table, and they need to come to their senses. So you know, the longer a shutdown goes on, the worse it is for our population. I mean, if it lasts a week, it probably won't be felt by anybody, but for the last month or two months, it absolutely will be felt.
