Midland High senior quarterback Stroman Bridges has officially received his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

According to the Midland Independent School District (MISD), Bridges received a personal call from United States Congressman August Pfluger Thursday morning to share the news.

"I know that you have got a lot of things that you are going to do there, it is going to be an exciting time," Congressman Pfluger said.

With Bridges' phone on speaker for the class to hear, Pfluger told him, "I think the most important thing is that you wanted to serve and become an Army officer, we are also looking forward to you playing football there."

According to MISD, admission into a United States Service Academy requires not only academic excellence and extracurricular achievement, but also a nomination from a member of congress.

"Applicants must complete a process that includes interviews, letters of recommendation, medical evaluations and evidence of strong character with strong leadership potential," MISD said.

Generations of Army officers have been produced out of the United States Military Academy at West Point, according to the district. That includes two United States presidents and numerous distinguished military leaders.

"Graduates are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army and are required to serve a minimum of five years on active duty following graduation," said MISD.

Bridges views this next chapter as the beginning of a life of leadership and service, MISD said.
