Rep. Pfluger files bills to block noncitizens from voting, administering elections

Rep. August Pfluger has filed a trio of bills seeking to alter voting laws, specifically targeting non-U.S. citizens.

Administration of Elections

HR 882 seeks to prevent noncitizens from administering an election for federal office.

The No Foreign Persons Administering Our Elections Act would “prohibit noncitizens from serving as election administrators for U.S. federal elections,” according to a press release from the congressman’s office. “This bill follows several accounts of noncitizens being sworn in to serve on election commissions throughout the country, even when they are not legally allowed to vote in the United States.”

Voting in DC Local Elections

HR 884 aims to prohibit non-U.S. citizens from voting in the District of Columbia and to repeal district’s Local Rights Voting Act of 2022, which allows noncitizens to vote in its local elections.

“This bill follows a nearly unanimous vote by the D.C. City Council to advance a bill that would allow noncitizens to vote in local elections — even if they have only resided in D.C. for 30 days,” Pfluger’s office said.

Pfluger filed the same bill during the 118th Congress; however, it died in the Senate.

Amendment to the Constitution

HJ Res 31 seeks to amend the Constitution to prohibit non-U.S. citizens, foreign nationals and lawful permanent residents from voting in elections.
